Unit-Wise UGC NET Commerce Syllabus 2026
Unit 1: Business Environment and International Business
This unit introduces the business environment and the international side of commerce.
Important topics include economic systems and policies, political and legal environments, Consumer Protection, FEMA, CSR, globalization, international trade theories, tariffs, non-tariff barriers, FDI and FPI, balance of payments, regional economic integration, IMF, World Bank, UNCTAD and WTO.
If you are studying this unit for the first time, don’t try to memorize everything. Understand how changes in government policy, trade and globalization affect businesses.
Unit 2: Accounting and Auditing
Accounting is one of the areas where conceptual clarity really matters.
The syllabus covers basic accounting principles, partnership accounts, corporate accounting, holding company accounts, cost and management accounting, financial statement analysis, human resource accounting, Indian Accounting Standards and IFRS. Auditing and recent trends in auditing are also included.
Keep a separate notebook for formulas and accounting adjustments. It can save a lot of revision time later.
Unit 3: Business Economics
This unit covers the economic concepts used in business decision-making.
Focus on demand analysis, elasticity, consumer behaviour, utility analysis, indifference curves, laws of production, theory of cost, market structures such as perfect competition, monopoly, monopolistic competition and oligopoly, along with pricing strategies.
Numerical questions can appear from areas such as elasticity, cost and revenue, so don’t study this unit as pure theory.
Unit 4: Business Finance
Business Finance is another important area for Commerce aspirants.
The major topics include time value of money, cost of capital, capital structure, capital budgeting, working capital management, dividend decisions and theories, risk and return, and international financial management.
For preparation, practise numerical problems regularly. Knowing a formula is useful, but knowing when to apply it is much more important.
Unit 5: Business Statistics and Research Methods
This unit combines statistics with research methodology.
Important areas include measures of central tendency and dispersion, skewness, correlation, regression, probability, probability distributions, sampling, estimation, hypothesis testing and research methods.
Spend extra time practising calculations. A student who understands the logic behind a statistical formula usually performs much better than someone who simply memorises formulas.

Unit 6: Business Management and Human Resource Management
This unit covers both management concepts and HRM.
Prepare principles and functions of management, motivation, leadership, organisational culture, organisational development and change, human resource planning, recruitment, selection, training, performance appraisal, compensation and incentive management.
Theories and thinkers are frequently confused during revision, so create small comparison tables for them.
Unit 7: Banking and Financial Institutions
This unit focuses on India’s banking and financial system.
Topics include types of banks, banking sector reforms, the Reserve Bank of India, monetary policy, digital banking, internet and mobile banking, payment systems, financial institutions, NBFCs, mutual funds and pension funds.
For current preparation, also keep an eye on official regulatory developments because banking and financial regulations can change.

Unit 8: Marketing Management
Marketing is much easier when you connect concepts with everyday life.
Study marketing concepts and approaches, consumer behaviour, segmentation, targeting and positioning, product decisions, product life cycle, new product development, pricing, promotion, distribution channels and logistics management.
For example, when a company launches a new product and gradually changes its advertising and pricing as the product becomes mature, you are actually seeing the product life cycle in practice.
Unit 9: Legal Aspects of Business
This unit requires careful reading because small differences between legal provisions can matter in MCQs.
Major areas include the Indian Contract Act, Companies Act, Information Technology Act, Right to Information Act and financial markets.
Make short notes containing important definitions, principles and provisions. Avoid trying to memorise entire legal texts.
Unit 10: Income-tax and Corporate Tax Planning
The final unit deals with taxation and tax planning.
Important topics include basic concepts of income tax, residential status, tax incidence, computation of taxable income under different heads, international taxation, double taxation avoidance, transfer pricing and corporate tax planning.
Questions may also involve practical business decisions such as make-or-buy and own-or-lease decisions.
A Simple Way to Prepare the Syllabus
Imagine you have six months before the exam. Instead of trying to finish all ten units randomly, divide them into manageable groups.
For example, start with Accounting and Auditing, Business Finance and Business Economics. Then move to Statistics and Research Methods. After that, cover Management, Banking and Marketing, followed by Business Law and Taxation.
Keep one day every week for revision.
And don’t wait until the end to solve MCQs. After completing each topic, solve questions immediately. This helps you discover whether you actually understood the topic or merely recognised the words while reading.
For Commerce by Bushra, the most useful approach is simple: understand the concept first, revise it later, and practise questions repeatedly.
Final Thoughts
When you look at all ten units of the Commerce Syllabus of UGC NET, it can seem like a massive syllabus. However, when you divide it up into smaller subject areas, it’s much easier to handle.
Don’t make the mistake of studying only the units you like. Commerce Paper 2 will have a broad syllabus, so cover a wide range of the subjects.
Follow the official syllabus, create a realistic timetable, grasp concepts, solve MCQs questions and update the timetable regularly. Most importantly, don’t judge your preparation based on how many pages you have done. Evaluate it on the basis of your ability to answer questions from memory.
By the time of the exam, that little tweak in your strategy could make a huge difference.
